Advocacy & Support
We believe all patients deserve to be supported by our society, medical professionals, and government during this difficult journey regardless of their background, income, or access to healthcare. We provide resources for individuals struggling with addiction as well as publicly advocate for policy changes to support them better.
Advocacy for Better Prescriber Habits
We can prevent accidental overdoses by curbing opioid overprescribing. But we need federal and state oversight to implement these programs.
In order to do this, we need better education for our healthcare providers about risks of opioid overprescribing, alternatives to opioid therapies for chronic pain treatment, and how to use Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) to prescribe opioids safely, when needed. DMF is dedicated to advocating for greater prescriber oversight to do this on a federal and state level.
Advocacy for Better Access to Treatment
In 2018, 1 in 12 Americans needed treatment for substance abuse disorder, and only 1 in 10 of those who need treatment will receive it. This is because only 18% of addiction treatment is paid for by private health insurance, and less than 2% of specialty addiction treatment programs offer all three FDA-approved medications for addiction.
All medical conditions should be covered equally by health insurance. States need parity laws to provide crucial enforcement details. DMF’s second priority is to advocate for health insurance companies and state/federal health programs to improve access for evidence-based care to get those struggling with substance abuse dependence the help they need.
SUPPORT FOR THOSE IN NEED
Financial and Emotional Support for Treatment
Most Americans do not have the financial capability to pay for recommended addiction and substance abuse treatment out-of-pocket. These individuals need guidance on how to gain access to insurance coverage for treatment centers. Many individuals without access to coverage will need support to enter treatment programs and maintain recovery afterwards.
David Michael Foundation is focused on providing a voice and resources for individuals struggling with addiction and recovery. We offer financial support, when possible, for patients in need of treatment at our partner organization treatment centers in the NY, WV, and FL areas. If you or a loved one is in need of help, please contact us today.
